Spurs lose in Thohoyandou
Cape Town Spurs lost their grip on top spot of the Motsepe Foundation Championship after they suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of Venda Football Academy at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Urban Warriors’ seventh defeat of the league season, combined with a 1-1 draw for Casric Stars in a concurrent game, saw the latter move up to first place, pushing Spurs down to second.
Casric leads the league with 54 points from 28 matches, while Spurs are second with 53 points from the same number of matches. Polokwane City are third on 51 points after they were beaten 1-0 by Uthongathi FC.
Venda struck first in the match at Thohoyandou, with Onke Moletshe finding the back of the net in the 32nd minute to put the hosts 1-0 up.
However, the Urban Warriors hit back in quick order, as Rushwin Dortley levelled the game at 1-1 in the 34th minute with a fine strike from a free kick.
The match stayed level up to half time, and for 19 minutes after the break, until Venda reclaimed the ascendancy, as Moletshe’s corner kick was headed home by Nhlanhla Makhubela for 2-1.
The Cape side fought for a way back into the match but were unable to find a way past Venda goalkeeper Samkelo Mbambo.
Spurs will next be in action in the MFC when they face NB La Masia at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto on the afternoon of Sunday 7 May.
