Urban Warriors targeting more glory in Kapstadt Cup

The Kapstadt Cup is set to kick off at four venues around Cape Town on Wednesday, October 8 and our boys are looking to bring home more silverware in the 2025 edition.

The annual event started out as a local grassroots football competition in 2010 and has evolved into an international tournament for age groups from Under-7 to Under-23.

The youth has done Cape Town Spurs proud down the years and they’ve represented our badge with distinction. The Under-14s have been the most successful team, bringing home the trophy in 2014, 2017, 2018, 2022 and 2023.

The Under-12s won their age group in 2021, while the Under-16s are the defending champions after beating Mamelodi Sundowns 5-4 on penalties in the 2024 final.

Our U12s, U14s and U16s will battle it out with teams from around South Africa and Namibia this year, with matches taking place at Athlone Stadium, Hartleyvale Stadium and Green Point Stadium.

Kapstadt Cup tournament director Zaid Omar spoke to Capetalk’s Pippa Hudson last week and highlighted how their vision has come to fruition.

“It’s fantastic, it’s a platform for development, it’s a platform to showcase talent and it’s a platform for everyone just to enjoy a top-class international standard event,” Omar said.

“I’ve seen players at Under-7 so many years ago and now actually playing in the PSL. There’s a player at Cape Town City, Dhakier Lee, that played in the Kapstadt Cup [at] Under-10 – he’s now playing for Cape Town City.

“There are so many of them, the list is endless that we’ve seen through the years. We’ve identified a player, Faiz Abrahams, he was Under-13 Player of the Tournament in 2019 and he’s now playing in Europe.

“So it’s very rewarding and it’s such a feel-good factor for us in achieving what we set out to do in terms of our vision. It’s a platform for kids to rise and showcase their talents.”
