Spurs look to home comforts against Rise And Shine
Cape Town Spurs will be seeking their first home win of the Motsepe Foundation Championship season when Polokwane City visit Athlone Stadium on Friday afternoon (3.30pm kick-off).
Shaun Bartlett’s side picked up their fifth point of the campaign in a 1-1 draw with Platinum City Rovers in Potchefstroom on Monday, which halted a run of back-to-back defeats.
Ashley Cupido scored his first goal of the season with the opener on 32 minutes, although the Urban Warriors were pegged back by Bonginkosi Dlamini’s equaliser 12 minutes later.
The coach felt it was two points dropped at Olen Park after we created some good chances to add to our one goal and he’s determined to get back on the winning trail against Rise And Shine.
Spurs are five points off the promotion places in 12th position and Shaun has stressed the importance of claiming a first victory on home soil to boost confidence levels in the team.
“Following our draw against Platinum City Rovers on Monday, which I personally feel we dropped points even though it’s one point away from home, I think we could have done more in order to grab all three points and obviously kickstart our season,” he said.
“We’ve got a home game coming up against Polokwane City tomorrow [Friday], which I feel is vital in our quest to get our season going. But also if we want to close the gap between the top five and ourselves, we need to make sure that we can get our second win of the season.
“We’ve been playing really well over the last couple of games but the decision-making in the final third has let us down and obviously not converting enough of our chances seems to be a bit of a problem even though we’re showing all the elements in training and the energy and what we need to do in order to get results we’re not having the same effect as far as the matches are concerned.
“So come tomorrow, our second home game of the season, we’re hoping to turn things around and really for the next few weeks get a run together. I think it’s important for us to make sure that we get that confidence back with another victory which will be good for morale in the team.”
