Tribute to former Cape Town Spurs striker Alton Meiring

Former Cape Town Spurs striker Alton Meiring passed away on 29 September 2024, and tributes have been pouring in from the world of South African football.

According to reports, Meiring was injured in a stabbing incident.

Regarded as a PSL legend, Meiring played for Cape Town Spurs in 1997-1999, scoring 17 goals in 51 appearances for the Mother City outfit.

The late former player has also played for Mamelodi Sundowns, AmaZulu, Golden Arrows and Moroka Swallows to name a few. He was also part of the national team, Bafana Bafana.

Retiring over a decade ago, Meiring did not stop playing a role in football and was incredibly active in the community. He also went into the youth coaching system, where he mentored a few clubs.

Meiring’s death was confirmed by Luso Africa, where he helped out as a coach.

“It is with a heavy heart that we confirm the passing of Coach Alton Meiring,” they said in an official statement posted on social media.

“He has been a big supporter of our club and has helped out multiple teams over the last few seasons, from juniors to seniors and even our ladies team. We are so grateful for his knowledge and assistance.”

“Please keep his family in your prayers.”
