Spurs CEO speaks about new sponsor and promotion
Cape Town Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou has taken the time to speak to the media about the club’s new sponsorship with Albany Bakery and what’s next in terms of seeking promotion.
Spurs have secured a three-year partnership with Albany Bakery, and Efstathiou spoke to The South African about the club’s next steps.
“Sponsorship at any time is a good thing,” said Efstathiou. “We may have to strengthen here and there, but it’s nothing too dramatic.”
He stressed that the main aim of the sponsorship is to support the youth development of Cape Town Spurs.
“It’s mostly to continue to support our youth department. Let’s see how we can make that better,” he continued.
“There are a couple of things like nutrition, it’s a critical thing. And without funding and without product, that takes a back seat. A lot of the youth come from difficult situations, so we would like to supplement in terms of what they need to make them better and stronger, to give them the best chance to succeed.”
Cape Town Spurs have struggled with several injury setbacks this season, which have affected their squad depth in their quest for promotion into the top-flight once again.
“We’ve been unlucky, never having our full squad available at all times,” said Efstathiou.
He highlighted how these injuries have disrupted the team, limiting their options.
“At one point, we had five or six attackers out. Luke (Baartman) was occupied with his Matric exams, came back, but got injured during a national team call-up, and it looks quite serious. Azola (Jakalashe) also got hurt in training.”
“You want to have a range of players to choose from, but we were left with just Therlo (Moosa), and Mervin (Boji) was also sidelined for a while.”
Despite these challenges, Efstathiou remains hopeful, believing the return of these players could make a big difference.
“We’ve got the players, it’s just that they haven’t been available. They’ll be like new signings for us,” he added.
