Spurs edge Leopards in Nedbank Cup preliminary tie

Cape Town Spurs advanced to the next phase of the Nedbank Cup competition this week after beating Black Leopards 4-1 on penalties at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Following a tense start in the Thohoyandou heat, Spurs did well to keep the home side at bay, who often took the direct route when going forward.

With Black Leopards relying on cross field diagonals as their main source of attacking movements, the Urban Warriors sat tight and dealt with the constant pressure midway through the first-half.

Despite very little action during the first-half, Spurs looked dangerous on the break, especially when stringing passes together inside the opposition half.

Angus Moss came close to opening the score count midway through the second-half, while Neill Boshoff kept the Warriors in the tie with a couple of saves before the 90th minute mark.

Spurs then survived a late scare moments before the end of regulation time, after Mwape Musonda failed to direct a header toward goal in the six-yard area. Nevertheless, the game was eventually forced into extra-time after a 0-0 scoreline at 90 minutes.

Then, following a half-hour in which neither side were able to convert their scoring chances, the Urban Warriors advanced to the next stage of the tournament following a 4-1 victory on penalties.
