Spurs suffer narrow defeat to Venda in MFC
Cape Town Spurs were defeated 2-1 by Venda Football Club in a closely contested Motsepe Foundation Championship clash played at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Spurs got on the front foot extremely early as they grabbed the lead in the very first minute through Therlo Moosa’s header into the far corner of the net, assisted by a swift cross from Asanele Velebayi.
The home team however, strived to get back into the game and the next 30 minutes of play saw the Urban Warriors defending their territory. Venda got the equaliser in the 35th minute as Ranoko Tau rose high from a set piece and headed home.
With the two sides evenly balanced in the first half, they went into the half-time break one goal a piece with Spurs having plenty to do when play resumed.
Shortly after the second half went underway, the Urban Warriors found themselves behind as a lapse in concentration from the team’s defence led to Venda being in the lead in the 51st minute through Tshepo Mofokeng’s successful effort.
As the match progressed in Limpopo, Spurs worked hard to get back into the game however they struggled to break Venda’s defensive structure down. Coach Middendorp made a few changes in an effort to change the direction of the game as it neared its end.
As the Urban Warriors continued to attack in the dying stages of the game, it was not to be as the score ended 2-1 in Thohoyandou, seeing the team’s unbeaten streak in the league come to an end.
