Dominant Spurs dismantle Callies at Athlone
Cape Town Spurs put up a dominating display in the Motsepe Foundation Championship as they defeated Pretoria Callies 4-0 at the Athlone Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
It was a closely contested game from the beginning in Cape Town, as Spurs worked hard to find the opener. The two sides were level well into the later stages of the first half, until Khaya Mfecane opened the scoring for the Urban Warriors just before the break.
The home team worked to keep their lead intact in the crucial opening minutes of the second stanza, doing good defensive work to prevent conceding. Spurs doubled their lead in the 73rd minute, as Denzel du Plessis scored his first goal for the club in stunning fashion.
The momentum continued to build for the Urban Warriors into the 81st minute, as they recorded their third goal of the game with youngster Luke Baartman also getting his name on the scoresheet.
Spurs continued to run rampant as they netted their final goal of the match just before the stroke of full-time through Keenan Bezuidenhout’s successful effort. The team collected a crucial three points, taking them higher up the table in the second division.
