Spurs held to 1-1 draw by Cane Cutters

Cape Town Spurs were held to a 1-1 draw by Uthongathi FC at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu on Tuesday.

The result extends the Urban Warriors’ unbeaten run in the 2020-21 GladAfrica Championship season to three matches. The Cape club will end the day nine points behind joint-leaders Sekhukhune United and Jomo Cosmos, who won their respective fixtures this afternoon.

Spurs started the game well on a hot afternoon in KwaZulu-Natal and opened the scoring just short of the half-hour mark. Good interplay between Thendo Mukumela, Chumani Butsaka and Thoboni Mncwango created space for Asanele Velebayi who thumped the ball past the Uthongathi goalkeeper for the opening goal of the game.

The Cane Cutters improved following the interval and after having survived a few nervy moments, Spurs were ultimately punished in the 73rd minute as Thapelo Maleka fired past Darren Johnson to pull the two teams level.
Cape Town Spurs: Johnson; Stander (Dortley 64′), Sibande, Da Silva, Johannes (Sali 55′), Mukumela, K.Mfecane (Madikane 79′), Velebayi, Kgaswane, Butsaka (Cupido 79′), Mncwango (Khumalo 79′).
Goals: Velebayi 29′
Yellow cards: Khumalo
