Spurs held at home by Lions

Cape Town Spurs’ winless start to the season continued as the club were held to a 1-1 draw by Hungry Lions in a 2021/22 GladAfrica Championship match at Parow Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Spurs got off to a fast start and were almost creating chances at will in the early exchanges; the best of which fell to Abednigo Mosiatlhaga in the 15th minute.

The forward rounded Lions goalkeeper Glen Baadjies after bursting through on goal, but was denied on the line by an opposition defender.

Junior Sibande had the ball in the back of the net in the 26th minute of the match after heading home a Mosiatlhaga free-kick, but the goal was chalked off with the assistant referee’s flag raised for offside.

Having failed to take their chances, Spurs were in danger of conceding a sucker-punch goal and that almost transpired two minutes later, but Lincoln Vyver was on hand to save the day.

Hungry Lions finished the half on top and hit the crossbar in the 40th minute of the match to go into the half-time break with their tails up.

The Urban Warriors finally ended their goal drought within the opening minute of the second half. The Lions goalkeeper parried Khaya Mfecane’s initial cross into a dangerous area and Diassonama Bunga pounced, to open
Spurs’ account for the season and his personal account for the Cape Town club.

Lions levelled matters in the 65th minute through substitute Vuyisile Wana who made the desired impact off the bench for the visiting side.

Spurs pushed forward in the closing stages of the match in search of what would’ve been the decisive goal on the day, but the Lions’ defence held firm.

Starting XI: Vyver; Amutenya, Butsaka, Dortley, Sibande, Moroole, Abednigo, Mfecane (Velebayi 80′), Ryan, Losper (De Oliveira 74′), Bunga (Cupido 74′)

*Chumani Butsaka replaced Gregory Damons in the starting XI after the latter injured himself during warm-up.
