Confident Spurs take aim at Callies

Cape Town Spurs will be aiming to build on a morale-boosting win, before the October international break, when they take aim at Pretoria Callies in a 2021/22 GladAfrica Championship encounter on Sunday afternoon.

Kick-off at Wits Football Stadium is at 15h30 CAT.

The Urban Warriors defeated Black Leopards 2-0 at Athlone Stadium earlier this month, to go into the break level on seven points with both Lidoda Duvha and this weekend’s opponents.

Callies are on a two-game winning run. The Romans registered back-to-back away wins before the international break; defeating Platinum City Rovers (2-0) and Jomo Cosmos (2-1) on their travels.

“The international break came at a good time and at a time when we got some momentum, with that good win we registered before the break,” Spurs head coach Dylan Deane said ahead of this weekend’s fixture.

“But it also gave us an opportunity to bring our players with long-term injuries closer to full fitness and to give our players that have been playing a lot some valuable recovery time.

“In all, the break was good. We worked on certain principles. The players were fantastic, worked hard. The break was good for us. We had a good friendly match against Stellenbosch FC which we can take a lot of positives from.”

Deane believes that victory over Leopards has breathed fresh confidence into his team and he has encouraged them to go all out for victory in Johannesburg on Sunday.

“Callies, another away match for us. I think the boys will take confidence from the game against Leopards. In that game we proved that we can score, we can win and as a collective we are heading in the right direction. The players have always believed that, but now we have proof,” Deane explained.

“Every match is competitive, but I want the boys to focus on our strengths and not too much on the opponents. Use our strengths so make sure we put a good performance together, as we have been. We are going there full of confidence, we are going there with the mindset of playing on the front foot and with the aim to get all three points. We need to go and attack,” he added.

Last season, both teams registered 1-0 away wins in this fixture. A solitary goal from Ashley Cupido spearheaded Spurs to victory at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
