Urban Warriors in numbers: Exploring the first half of the season

With the second half of the season almost upon us, let’s take a look at how the Urban Warriors fared during the opening five months of the GladAfrica Championship campaign.

Shaun Bartlett’s side collected 20 points from their 17 matches before the mid-season break, with a record of four wins, eight draws and five defeats.

After kicking things off with a goalless draw at home to Venda FC on August 22, we went six games before picking up our first three-point haul – a 2-0 success over Black Leopards at Athlone Stadium on October 3.

However, the boys were quickly brought back down to earth in their next outing, losing 6-1 away to Pretoria Callies – Spurs’ biggest defeat during the first half of 2021/22.

That sparked a five-match winless run for the club, which also included losses against University of Pretoria (4-2) and league leaders Richard Bay (2-1).

But we finished 2021 strongly with a five-game unbeaten sequence, having beaten TTM twice (4-0 away and 1-0 at home) as well as TS Sporting (2-1).

Bartlett will want to address the team’s form on the road when the league resumes after picking up one solitary win from seven fixtures on their travels before the turn of the year.

If just half of those had been turned into victories the Urban Warriors would be breathing down the necks of Richards Bay and JDR Stars at the top of the table.
