Spurs earn a point in final GAC tie

Cape Town Spurs earned a point in their final GladAfrica Championship game of the season following their 0-0 draw against Richards Bay at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

After a feeling out process in the first five minutes of the encounter, Spurs managed to show their attacking intent and were awarded a corner. However, coach Shaun Bartlett’s men were unable to make the chance count.

The home side applied pressure thereafter, creating a couple goal scoring opportunities but the Spurs defence held their own.

As Spurs continued to attack, while seeing more of the ball, Richards Bay were reduced to counter attacks as the 20 minute mark approached.

With 30 minutes on the clock, Spurs continued to look for openings in the Rich Boyz defence, as the log leaders were then forced to keep the Cape Town side at bay.

Spurs carved out one of the best chances of the half when Gregory Damons whipped the ball into the box, however, Eyona Ndondo was unable to guide his header on target. With 35 minutes on the clock, the Urban Warriors showed their tenacity.

Richards Bay were slick in attack and threatened the Spurs defence on numerous occasions as the half drew to a close but were unable to capitalise on their attempts.

The second-half began on a positive note for both teams as Richards Bay and Spurs took the game to each other. As the tie hit the hour mark, much of the ball was played in the Urban Warriors half.

With momentum swinging in Richards Bay’s favour in and around the 75 minute mark, the hosts continued venturing forward however, Spurs showed solidarity with the likes of Bevan Fransman and Damons being rock solid.

The game ended in a 0-0 stalemate at the King Zwelithini Stadium, as the two sides shared the spoils on the afternoon. The result also confirmed Richards Bay’s promotion to the DStv Premiership.
