Did You Know? – The History of Cape Town Spurs
Cape Town Spurs FC is a South African professional football club based in the City of Cape Town, playing in the National First Division. The team was established on 11 January 1970 and play most of their home games at the Athlone Stadium.
The team competed in the National Professional Soccer League from 1971 to 1984, and then the National Soccer League from 1985 to 1995, winning the championship in the final season before the establishment of the South African Premier Division in 1996. The team was previously known as Ajax Cape Town until September 2020.
Nicknamed the “Urban Warriors”, the team’s highest finish is being runners up in the 2003/04, 2007/08 and 2010/11 seasons. They have won the Rothmans Cup in 2000, Nedbank Cup in 2007, Telkom Knockout in 2008 and most recently the MTN8 in 2015.
In 2020, Ajax Cape Town ended their relationship with Dutch football club AFC Ajax, with Cape Town Stars gaining full control of the club and subsequently was renamed Cape Town Spurs.
The team has made two appearances in the CAF Champions League (2005 and 2008) and one appearance in the CAF Confederation Cup in 2008. The club’s record goalscorer is Nathan Paulse who netted 56 goals during his two spells.
Mabhuti Khenyeza is also a notable player who scored the most goals in a season for the club (23) in the 2008/09 season.
