Cape Town Spurs’ journey in the 2023/24 DStv Premiership
Cape Town Spurs inspired many when they gained promotion to the DStv Premiership and competed in the 2023/24 season.
Spurs recorded five victories during their time in the top-flight, four of which came in the second half of the season.
The Urban Warriors’ relegation from the league was confirmed following Richard’s Bay’s 1-0 victory over Orlando Pirates. The team had worked hard against a tough SuperSport United side to get a draw.
Ernst Middendorp joined the team as head coach in December and after 16 games, he picked up 16 points.
The German coach has a reputation for saving teams from relegation, and showed promise for Spurs but the poor start to the season ended up becoming too tough a task to recover from.
In spite of their relegation from the top-flight, Middendorp remains the coach who is equipped to guide the club back to the Premiership.
“I bought into the vision of the club from day one. The picture that the board put in front of me, really excited me and we had started implementing the plans with the intention on building on this in the new season,” he says.
