Middendorp explains decision not to sign Erasmus
Cape Town Spurs head coach Ernst Middendorp has confirmed that the club has decided not to sign a contract with striker Kermit Erasmus.
Erasmus was training with the team to keep up his match fitness, he trained for a week before he made his departure.
Spurs did not have an intention to sign the player, as they feel that he belongs in the Betway Premiership and not the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Erasmus is a free agent at the moment, following his parting of ways with Orlando Pirates at the end of last season.
The 34-year-old scored 26 goals for Pirates and registered 19 assists for his former team over two spells.
Middendorp expressed that he did not want the club to sign any player who can jump at the opportunity to join a top-flight side once their fitness is in order.
“He was here for some days but everybody has to understand he is a PSL player and I could see still he has a clear target, a clear direction,” Middendorp told Radio2000.
“We allowed him to train for a week [but] it was not really going to happen that he will be part of the team.”
“I think you cannot have a rehabilitation centre or condition centre where somebody gets fit and runs away,” he added.
“We had it in the near past, we had Thato Mokeke last year starting with us in January and we could use him earliest as April and played a couple of friendlies before moving on.”
