Spurs look to get back on track with Highbury win

Cape Town Spurs will be determined to return to winning ways in the Motsepe Foundation Championship when they host Highbury FC at the Athlone Stadium on Friday.

Kick-off is at 19h30.

The Urban Warriors managed to pick up an important point on the road when they held promotion-chasing JDR Stars to a 0-0 draw on 22 February as the team’s defence caught the eye.

Spurs are placed 15th in the Motsepe Foundation Championship standings – level on points with 14th-placed Venda FC who are scheduled to travel to North West to face Ortbit College on Saturday.

A victory over Highbury would see coach Ernst Middendorp’s side boost their confidence in their bid to avoid relegation from the local second-tier and challenge for promotion to the PSL.

Meanwhile, Highbury are undefeated in their last two matches having secured a 5-1 victory over promotion-chasing Milford FC on 21 February as they boosted their own promotion ambitions.

Amajuba are placed ninth in the Motsepe Foundation Championship standings and the Eastern Cape-based side are six points behind third-placed JDR Stars with 11 matches left.

The last meeting between Spurs and Highbury ended in a 1-0 victory in favour of Amajuba in Gqeberha on 7 December.

This was the first-ever competitive meeting between the two teams and the Urban Warriors will be looking to avenge the defeat at home.
