First-half strike hands AmaTuks win over Spurs

University of Pretoria claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Cape Town Spurs in the Motsepe Foundation Championship match played at the Athlone Stadium on Friday night.

As a result, the Urban Warriors slipped down to the 15th spot in the league standings, level on points with 13th-placed Venda FC. Spurs have two matches left in the South African top tier.

Spurs will turn their attention to their next match, which is against Hungry Lions on 11 May and the game is scheduled to be played at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium in Upington.

The Urban Warriors and AmaTuks got off to a promising start and they were both looking to grab an early goal in the opening 15 minutes of the encounter, but couldn’t find the back of the net.

However, this changed seven minutes before half-time as Samuel Julies scored from a corner-kick to hand the visitors the lead. University of Pretoria were leading 1-0 during the half-time break.

The Urban Warriors pushed for the equalising goal after the restart with coach Ernst Middendorp making changes, but AmaTuks stood firm at the back and ultimately, they emerged as 1-0 winners on the night.
