What Spurs need to survive in the MFC

Ahead of our final game of the 2024-25 season, we look at the permutations needed for Cape Town Spurs to retain their Motsepe Foundation Championship status for next term.

Ernst Middendorp’s side moved level with Venda FC on 30 points after battling back from behind to claim a valuable 1-1 draw away to Hungry Lions last weekend.

However, Spurs are kept in the relegation zone on goal difference, with the Limpopo outfit only one goal better off in 14th position following a 1-1 stalemate against Casric Stars.

The Urban Warriors need a result at home to Durban City on Sunday to give themselves any chance of avoiding the drop, although they need Kruger United to do them a favour.

A draw against the league leaders could be enough to stay up, but that would depend on Venda FC losing to the team from Mpumalanga. Spurs will survive if they beat City and Stanford Nkoane’s men only manage to pick up a point against Kruger United.

Should both clubs win on the final day of the campaign, we could still pip Venda FC to safety by coming out on top with a two-goal swing in our favour.

But Middendorp will be urging his players to take destiny into their own hands and potentially play spoiler in the race for automatic promotion. Durban City ran out narrow 1-0 victors in the reverse fixture at Chatsworth Stadium on September 27, though their away form hasn’t been great in the run-in after winning just two of their last five matches on the road.
