Spurs’ season in review
Cape Town Spurs faced a challenging season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, with both ups and downs marking their fight to remain in the second division.
The Urban Warriors started their campaign well, with two draws and two wins from their first four fixtures. However, this was followed by 10 games without a win, including eight losses and two draws between the end of September and the end of December.
Spurs started the new year off well, snapping their streak with a win over Casric Stars before drawing three, winning one and losing one of their next five fixtures.
A loss against Venda and a win against Baroka were followed by an unbeaten streak of five games, consisting of four draws and an emphatic 4-0 victory over Pretoria Callies.
They then fell to the University of Pretoria 1-0 before snatching an all important point thanks to a late goal away against Hungry Lions, keeping Spurs in the fight for survival.
The Urban Warriors fought until the very last day of the season where, despite a valiant effort, they fell 1-0 to Durban City.
Spurs finished the season in 15th place on 30 points, one point behind Venda and in the relegation zone. Out of 30 league games, Spurs registered six wins, 12 draws and 12 losses. They finished on a goal difference of minus six, having scored 24 and conceded 30.
Spurs enjoyed a good run in the Nedbank Cup, beating fellow NFD side Black Leopards 4-1 on penalties in the first round, punishing Venda 3-1 in the second round and eventually falling to SuperSport United 2-1 in extra time in the round of 16.
During the 2024/25 campaign, Luke Baartman emerged as a serious talent for Spurs. The 18-year-old showed flashes of brilliance on the pitch and established himself an integral part of the team. The Spurs academy product bagged three goals in 11 appearances in the Motsepe Foundation Championship this season.
