Former Spurs player coaches Kenya to CHAN quarterfinals

Cape Town Spurs alum Benni McCarthy has led the Kenyan national team to the quarterfinals of the CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN). 

The tournament, which is being jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, is a showcase of talent on the African continent with teams only using players based in their respective domestic leagues. 

Under McCarthy’s guidance, Kenya emerged unbeaten from group A with three wins and one draw. The Harambee Stars recorded 1-0 wins against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Morocco and Zambia, and a 1-1 draw with Angola. 

Kenya will face Madagascar in the CHAN quarterfinals on Friday where they will be looking to advance further on home soil in their tournament debut. 

The 47-year-old accepted the head coaching job in March and has certainly found his feet after collecting one win in four games prior to the start of the tournament. 

McCarthy spent the 1996/97 season at Spurs on loan from Seven Stars before his performances for the Urban Warriors earned him a move to Dutch Eredivisie side Ajax.
