‘It made a huge difference’ – Allie on Spurs academy life

Cape Town Spurs captain Nazeer Allie has opened up about life in the club’s academy and revealed how things changed when he joined the Western Cape giants.

The 40-year-old defender is in his 21st season since he made his first team debut for the Urban Warriors almost 21 years ago and he is leading the team in the ABC Motsepe League Western Cape Stream.

“Yeah, it has been a long journey for me at Cape Town Spurs, which started at the age of 11 or 12,” Allie told the club’s media.

“That is where it all started for me. I moved through the ranks [and I] got a professional contract. Then yeah, it took off from there. That is why I am grateful to Cape Town Spurs for being part of my department.

“Obviously, the most important thing for me was, like you said, about foundation, the development, where I came from first, before joining the Cape Town Spurs academy, was that I trained once or twice a week,” he added.

“From there, when I joined the academy, it changed, from one or twice to five times a week. So, if you compare that to once or twice a week to five times a week, it made a huge difference in my development.

“Improving in every department of my skills. So, today it is still the same for me. I still go out there, I come to training, and I do the same thing that I have learned in the past in my development.”

Spurs will resume their league campaign with an away match against Rovers at the Heideveld Sports Complex on January 23.
